What is the psychic cost of idiocy?

I am not referring to forums, sparring on those forums, or general argumentative asshats online. I am referring to the price we pay, as a race of people, for the idiocy of our peers, in all things, not merely gaming.

Any 'thoughts'?

It is the downfall of democracy. Democratic government REQUIRES informed citizens. When you get a citizenry that is uneducated, uninformed, and disenterested... democracy becomes impossible. You end up with people casting votes with little or no information about what they're voting for. They either believe what the ads on TV tell them, or they do what their parents or friends tell them to do. Either way their vote is uninformed and means nothing about what they ACTUALLY want government to do. Furthermore, those in power (the politicians) KNOW that they can appeal to those mindless masses with flashy TV ads and big fancy promises...and they know that they will not be held responsible for their actions due to the disinterest of the people.

Well said

I am actually looking for discussion on the the PRICE of idiotic behavior on our race. Politics need not enter into it, although I somehow should have known it would.

good point, we had a discussion somewhat like this today at school..

ads and television by the media creates fear upon other people. sometimes they think "i need that" just to look fabulous or get other people to like you. i think this makes the world a screwed up cycle of stereotypes... (not that this covers everythin)

Idiocy is the catalyst for all that ails mankind today. We have leaders who masquerade behind facades built of nothing but lies and twisted promises. We have celebrities who "guide" culture based on their skewed senses of reality. We have the general populace who live in a disposable world and who generally don't give a rip about anyone but themselves and their instant gratification. They live to dominate and posture as if their lives are more important than anyone else's.

We live in a world of idiocy and self-centeredness. Those are the "price" we pay for idiocy.

***PIE IN THE SKY ALERT***

Yet....there is hope and there are those who recognize and who try to break out of the lemming mold that we're constantly being forced into. I thank God for my hope every day of my life. I thank Him for the disease he sent into my life to wake me up and bring me back to being a human again.

So...there is hope. There is light. There is tremendous good out there. You just have to shuffle through the idiots to find it.

You just did what I thought I could never accomplish. That is my only reason for my behavior on these forums being asinine. To make people THINK. Nice

I know this is going to sound like a flame... but oh well. Anyone who believe that Michael Moore tells the truth, is a member of the group of people this topic is directed at. By the same token however, anyone who believes that everything Rush Limbaugh says is the truth, belongs in the same catagory. TRUE knowledge is something one acquires for themselves, not something that is simply given to them.

Michael Moore? Boy...now -there's- an historian. He's an ENTERTAINER not a documentarian no matter what he thinks. LOL! He is idiocy personified. Saying you learned anything from Michael Moore is like saying you learned all you need to know about snakes by watching "Anaconda".

True, unbridled NON-IDIOCY is having no secrets about everyday life being kept from a person by their own choices. When I say idiot, I am not referring to someone who is uneducable. I am I saying they are ignorant by their own cognitive decision to remain in the dark on something, by either assuming things, denying them, or just playing the 'false bravado' card. People are not idiotic by lack of choice.

My question is, why?

Laziness. If people can't get instantly gratified in whatever it is they are pursuing, they get bored and go after something that does satisfy immediately...like online gaming and McDonald's.

Clearly there is no lack of knowledge in this world...or at least in the US. There is no lack to the easy acquisition of knowledge either. It is simply one's drive that determines whether or not they will actively pursue it.

Case in point: Unwanted pregnancy in a day when condoms are free, ads run on TV, children are educated about how to avoid it in school, parents aren't afraid to talk about it anymore.

Also, I'd add to laziness the theory of lemmings: People want to be told what to do, when to do it and how. They don't give a damn about the whys or trying to think for themselves.
